Maynard is looking for a park

As dogs become part of peoples families and families want to be involved in their communities, more people are trying to get their towns in creating dog parks. That's no small task here in Massachusetts. A group though in my home town of Maynard has started a petition to create a dog park. You can read more about there goals on their blog (maydog.wordpress.com).

We are advocating for part of the old capped landfill on Waltham Street to be converted to a fenced, off-leash recreation area (OLRA) for dogs and their owners. We need to demonstrate community support by gathering petition signatures to submit to the Board of Selectmen (see petition here: http://www.petitiononline.com/maydog/petition.html). Assuming the Board approves the idea, we will need to raise funds for fencing, benches, a kiosk, bag dispensers, trash receptacles, a water source, and signs and will need ongoing support in terms of monitoring and regular mowing.

I would encourage everyone in the area to take a look at what they are trying to do and sign the petition. The more signatures they get, the more people will understand it's importance to our town.

Great blog!

I have two dogs. A Beagle and a Choc Lab.

We like to go to the Howard & Erna Soldan Dog Park in Lansing and love it. It's a little under construction right now from some storms earlier this summer, but is usually great.

I will be posting some pics of mine on my blog http://midmichiganallstars.blogspot.com

Check it out.

What a great blog! I love taking my dog to the dog park, although the one by is isn't kept up like it should be. So I find myself searching for a new park.

Your blog is clever and timely. Dog parks are becoming increasingly popular. I don't know what city you are talking about, it could be mine. I think we have 8 dog parks in our city, with more planned. I think they are a great idea.

I'm not use to the wide audience. It's Maynard MA. It's my home town. The Acton MA park I photograph at is just the next town over. MA is not a dog park friendly state. They would rather make soccer fields instead. Most places around me are self managed and when it works well it's great. When it doesn't, well, it's not.

How could any group advocate putting a dog park on top of the closed Maynard Landfill? This closed dump contains cancer-causing chemicals. Why would anyone expose themselves and their pets to cancer-causing chemicals? This petition drive sounds like a sleazy way to develop a closed toxic waste site without spending money on any cleanup.
