A commitment

We love our pets. We enjoy every moment that we spend with them and think about them when we're away. What is less tangible is that commitment that we've made. For most animals in good homes, it's a great life. One with happiness and love. But our lives change all the time. We move, we have kids, we get new jobs. For our pet though, we are still the center of their world. We matter more then anything because without a family, they are lost. I think that's why making a commitment is so important. We have to know that we've taken on the responsibility of our pet and that is for their entire life. Most of us will out live our pets. If you get your dog as a puppy, you will see a complete life form around you. That is an amazing thing and something that everyone should take seriously. Everyone should enjoy the life they've taken responsibility for. If you change jobs, meet your future spouse, have kids, that shouldn't take away from a pet owners responsibility.

My readers love their pets. They are their family. My dog just turned 7 and is living a great life but I know he is middle aged. I take my responsibility very seriously. That is why I try to give my pets as good a life I can. And they, in return give back to my family so much more.

Thanks for posting this. I completely agree. I am often saddened at how many pets are abandoned at shelters because their family moved, divorced, or had children. I wish that all dog owners took the commitment seriously - even after the cute puppy stage is over.

nice post and i couldn't agree more. i do have to say that i am thankful that the folks who had echo before we got him realized that they weren't giving him the best life. we are so lucky to have him. making a commitment can be about doing what's best too.

Very true. Wonderful Post. I got my dog as a puppy, and he's 3 now. I look forward to the many happy years we are going to spend together. :-)

I think so too! Having a pet, especially a dog, is about more than tricks and training and even keeping them safe and comfortable. Its about a relationship, not ownership.

Happy wandering!

I was at the dog park in Mentor, OH yesterday. Please see Cosmo and friends on my blog. Cosmo the JRT maybe the smallest in the park, but he can run with the big ones and is quite the little dictator. I like reading your posts.

So true! My dogs are members of the family as well. They are always considered in every decision - whether it's if they can go with us somewhere, or who I trust to take care of them. Every dog deserves to be someone's favorite.

Very well written and I couldn't agree more!! My husband and I adopted SweetPea after her previous "home" was condemned. She was tortured and terrified. No life that anyone, human or animal, should have to live. I can't imagine not giving her the best life we possibly can. She is very much a strong part of our family and really helped me cope when I lost my other "baby", Copper, after 13 years, a sudden death after a short struggle (thankfully) with cancer. I'm glad to know that there are others that understand the Importance and the Commitment of being a pet owner. It's not something to take littly.

Great blog you have here. Yes, dogs are definitely family. I only wish they lived longer! I too went through cancer treatments with my departed Aussie, and now I've been rescued by another dog, my Border collie Prissy. Thanks for the wonderful photos and posts.
