Let it snow!

It's nice to finally see snow on the ground at the park. Some of the dogs were so happy to finally run in the powder again. Unlike last year, it's been pretty scarce. Snow on a sunny day is great! The brown of the tree's aren't as bad when the dead grass isn't so obvious.

This little Mini Pin wasn't so wild about it though but it wasn't because of the snow. She had a bad experience at the park with a bigger dog a few weeks back where the bigger dog was too aggressive. Now she won't leave the safety of her mom's legs. I know all about that because Toby is the same way. He's still fussy about the park and dog's have a good memory for bad things happening some places. I feel bad for the little gal. Her mom is making a good effort to get her out and playing with her friends though. These two dogs are super submissive and just wanted to play but she just didn't want any part of it this week. Maybe next week.

Two regulars to the park are Oliver and Jake. Jake I've known for as long as I've been coming to this park but Oliver and I are just getting to know each other. There is a beauty of senior dogs that just makes people melt like when the see a puppy. You dog lovers know what I mean. You see a puppy and you just want to pet them and play. Well senior dogs are similar to the point that you want to pet them and show them lots of love. They don't move fast or have big, excited expressions. They have seen the world and know all their is to know (for a dog). They know what is important: Their owner, a comfortable bed, a good soft treat, some time outside and love when they ask. Seems like they have the right idea.

This weekend, Maggie was on her own. Normally, Maggie and Snuggles show up to the park and run, bark, chance and tag team all the other dogs. They do it all for fun but they can be loud and freak out some of the other dogs. We love them but this week, they decided to break them up. Maggie and Jake came but Snuggles went to another park. They were testing to see if Maggie could be on better behavior if she's just on her own.
I wasn't at the park long (still helping Toby deal with his issues) but it seemed to be a good start. Their are lots of Aussie's that come to the park so there is not shortage of dogs that want to herd anyone they can.
Maggie didn't stand around long, but I got these two nice shots of her just hanging out. I thought they made a nice pair. I need to take a photo of Snuggles to do the same thing. (I've got LOTS of photos of Jake so he shouldn't mind too much).

I'm excited that the new year is here. I'm already working on new projects and trying new ideas. I want to get to the park more and the way the weather has been, It should be pretty easy. Except for Halloween, there has been no snow. This weekend has already been in the 60's so I expect there should be lots of people and dogs out.
This photo of Bella shows watching the entrance to the park. She is always watching to see if her other Aussie friends are going to show up.
There are a more new people who have been coming to the park. A bulldog named Tank just started showing up. He's super cute and I hope to get some good photos soon. Last week, I didn't stay long because Toby was still upset but I'm planning on going early, tossing the tennis ball and see if I can get his energy out. He's getting up their in years but he still loves fetching.

Toby needed a walk

To get Toby back in the swing of things at the park, we got there early and did the long walk on the paths behind the park. I really love going on those paths when the weather is cool and the ground is hard. In the warmer months, it can get really muddy and hard to avoid the swampy areas. It's nice now because there is traction, not too slick and easy to get around. Toby needed the walk to get his energy out and feel better about being at the park. I had to coax him through the park but once we got up to the path, he was happy to lead the way. We did the long walk that lasted almost 45 minutes. He didn't seem that worn out even though I was but once we got back to the park, it was busy with people and dogs. Toby wasn't ready to socialise yet so since he headed for the car, I followed and we took off.
This is a good first step for him and I hope he'll be back to his friendly self soon. I don't want to be that guy with the mean dog that everyone keeps away from. I like being that weird photographer guy who is always around with his camera, taking pictures and talking with people.

Holiday Pics, this weekend.

The next two weeks, I'll be doing a holiday photo shoot from noon to 4pm at Pet Source. This weekend I'll be in Marlborough at their store and it should be a great event. Everyone who gets a photo, gets a awesome goodie bag and if you sign up ahead of time, you can get a %20 discount on all your shopping at Pet Source that day. I've already got a bunch of people signed up so I know it's going to be a BUSY day. Hope to see you there.

There was some confusion about the dates and stores but it's all cleared up. Come to Marlborough on the 10th and Concord on the 17th.

Starting over for Toby.

Looks like Toby is going to need lots of coaxing to get back into the park again. Last week he heard gun shots so this weekend, he didn't want to go. This isn't the first time this happened and I had to work hard to get him comfortable with the park. It will take some work but I know I can do it. The plan will bring him early, go for a walk in the woods and let him get his energy out. Once he's done that a few times, he'll be better off. I wish I had more time to bring him to the park but work and life gets too much in the way so far.
I decided to edit these photos I took of him to show how he was feeling. I'm using a program called Lightroom to edit my photos and it does a great job of allowing me to be creative. What do you think?

The gloomy weather didn't stop anyone from coming out today. It was busy and I talked with a few of my regular friends. The funny thing was we were talking about how my dog, Toby has been so much better at the park. He was running around and playing with other dogs.

But then it happened. Toby heard the gun club. First shot he perked up but he was okay. But then it kept going and he tucked his tail and headed to the parking lot. I went and got Toby and, foolishly brought him back to try to get him to calm down. It didn't work and when other dogs came by and sniff around, Toby got very aggressive. After a few minutes, I had to leave the park. I felt so bad for Toby. He has been doing so well and made great strides and enjoying the park again. Now I’m worried he is going to be afraid again and it will take months of support to get him to like it again.

Next week will be a new week and I’ll try to give him time to walk up in the woods to get his energy out before all the other dogs show up.

Fall is finally leading into winter so every nice day is more and more cherished. This Sunday was a beautiful day with enough sun and warmth to bring everyone out to the park. There was a few new faces even like Riley. He wasn't wild about the camera but I got a nice photo of him.
It's been such a while since I've posted anything to the blog. Each weekend has been really crazy with photo events and clients or family. My next goal is to write up questions for the interview process for my book. I think I know enough people at the park now that I feel I can ask them to be involved with my book. I just need to know what I want to know next. More soon.

It's Columbus Day weekend and even though the weather is perfect, it wasn't very busy at the park. We got to the park early so I could get back home. I had a busy family day planned so I wanted to get to the park early. Even still, the park was almost empty when I got there and was still pretty quiet even when I left.
This new puppy Shepard was there. He is becoming a regular at the park and even though he's a puppy, he's doing really well. He listens and gets along well with all the other dogs. Puppies often get a lot of extra attention from the older dogs but this little guy has been holding his own. He doesn't get chased too much and listens well to his family.
I borrowed a telephoto lens and have been trying to learn to photograph dogs running and jumping better. My style has been to shoot with a wide angle lens and get close but I'm always trying to get better at shooting. Look at the other photos on my flickr page to see some of the the action pics.

Between all the new puppies and the summer like weather, Sunday was a pretty great day at the dog park. I really needed it too. I've been flat out, photographing all kinds of events lately. It's good to be busy with my camera and dogs but slowing down and spending quality time at the park and with my family is really important.
For me, it's about making time in my crazy schedule to do the things I want to be doing and move out the things that don't matter.
I invite my boys to come and some times the do but most times they don't. I think that will change when they get older but this is the one time just for me.
Everyone talks about how they bring their dogs so they could run around but that is only part of the story. The community is important too. The ability to slow down and just talk to someone of common interests. These are the things I love about the park and why I started this blog and book idea. The community that builds at dog parks is a unique event. I'm really interested in other peoples stories and I want to know more. I just need to make more time to prepare the book and talk to people.

It was a gorgeous Sunday at the park. Lots of people were there, hanging out, dogs running everywhere. I brought my boy, Geoffrey who had fun with the dogs, and throwing rocks into the pond. I'm not surprised it was so busy. Today's weather is so nice and everyone is trying to enjoy these nice days because fall isn't far away.

Today was a busy day at the park. After last weeks hurricane Irene, everyone was glad to be back. Some people were there for hours just letting their dogs run or walking the trails. It was also a day for new puppies to show up at the park. There were two golden puppies, a German Shepard puppy, and a few others I forget the breeds. Puppies always get a lot of attention but with the warm weather, the muggy day, everyone was just happy to be taking in the last weekend of the summer.
I know my summer flew by. I had lots of projects to work on and made it to the park as much as I could and over all had a good summer. Like most, I want it to last longer but the fall offers new projects. I'm doing a fundraiser photo even for a group called Smile for a Cure which raises money for Canine Cancer research. I'm shooting some smaller events in September and will shoot at Woofstock on October 1. I'm really busy.
I'm not giving up on my book project. I've been inspired by a project called Project Dog. They did a kickstarter fundraiser to get a book published. I know if I got my book to a level of completion, that I could totally get a Kickstarter project funded. I've talked to more people at the park and know I have a good group to interview. My ideal is to get a good writer to work with. We'll see.
Either way, I'll be back at the park, next week, taking pictures, talking to people and having a good time.

Perfect day for a pano

Sunday was cool and overcast with a threat of rain. A perfect day to photograph. Well, not normally but because I was testing out a panoramic head, it was perfect for me. The way it works is I attach my camera to a special tripod head that allows me to rotate my camera at a central point. I take about 24 photos as I spin the camera around and then I stitch them all together in Photoshop. A lot of the software (and even some cameras) make it really easy to put together photos that aren't centered properly. Because it's overcast, the lighting is the same all the way around me so my exposure is the same all the way around.
The only down side is that the park was kinda quiet and even though I tried to get around everyone with dogs, it still looks like the park ins empty.
I'm going to the Cape this weekend so I am going to bring the pano head again and do more on the beach, if I can get early enough.

I'm BACK! Our road trip across the east and the south was great. I didn't get to visit any dog parks this trip but I did hear of a great one in Cleveland called the Lakewood Dog Park. It's in a really nice area of Cleveland and can be busy all times of the week. They even have their own website which means there is a lot of support for dog owners. Let me know if you've ever been to it.

This last Sunday was great. The weather was perfect and I got to meet Shelby. A spunky 1.5 year old pointer who will chase any shadow it can find. Today, the dragon flies were out and he was loving it. The funny part of the whole thing was that it really seemed like the dragon flies were playing along. I don't really know the pattern of how dragon flies fly but they seemed to run in circles and stay around the grass where Shelby could find them to let her chase the shadows.
What was really funny was just figuring out what he was doing. I could tell she was chasing something but I couldn't figure out what. When I talked to his owner, he explained her love for the chase. The only thing that could stop her was a belly scratch but you could tell he was looking for the chase.

I was at the park early Sunday because I had lots to do at home that day. I brought my boy and dog and we had a good time but my boy, Geoffrey, gets board pretty quickly. The life of a three year old. We were walking out when Becky and Dan were walking in with everyone and it was starting to get busy.

A few weeks ago, I was talking photo stuff with someone at the park and the idea of offering a photo workshop came up. So readers; what do you think would be a good photo workshop? Would you be interested in one? Would you like a beginning or advanced workshop? Would you want a 1 day (4 hour) thing or a multi day process? Let me know.

Ah to be back in the park. It was such a nice summer day. A little muggy but the sun was out, not super hot, and dogs all around. There are ball dogs and water dogs and stick dogs but in general, it breaks down to two types. Dogs that love other dogs and dogs that love people. This gal is a people dog. Before I took this photo, I was squatting down, shooting other dogs. When I put the camera down, She was standing right in front of me, waiting for a butt scratch. Very cute.
Toby was over the moon about being at the park again. No cone of shame so he got to run around, jump in the pond, chase other dogs and just be a dog. He has really been wanting to go to the park for a while now. I've been so busy with photo events on the weekends, that this weekend was the first time in 3 weeks we've been at the park. It's going to be a crazy summer so I'm going to be real hit or miss at the park but I'll try to keep up with posts and events.

June has been a crazy month for me. I've been setting up my photo tent at different dog events which has been keeping me really busy. Whisker Walk and Bark in the Park were both a lot of fun and I got to meet all kinds of great dogs and owners but I miss my Sunday at the park. It's the one day a week just for Toby and me to just be. This Sunday, I'll be at the park again, camera in hand and dog at my side. I'm still looking for people and dogs to photograph for the diptych project so if you're interested, drop me a note and I could come by some time since the park is not the best place. Most people I've talked with aren't dressed for their picture. I'm not worried because it's just fun and a portfolio builder for me.

Whisker Walk this Sunday

I won't be at the park this sunday. Now that the nice weather is here, there are a lot of dog events going on and I'm going to try to get to some of them. This year starts off with me actually setting up a booth at Whisker Walk which is a really big event. It was the first event I did last year and even with lousy weather, I was really busy. Now with GREAT weather expect, I should be totally slammed. If you're in the area, stop by. I'm setting up a portable studio and will be doing 5x7 photos of dogs for only $25. It is a lot of fun and every animal friendly group will be there.

What an amazing day. When our weather has been all over the place between cold and wet, to warm and humid. Today's weather was perfect. Not too hot or humid. Just enough of both.
The dogs were loving the pond today. They were all running in, chasing balls, or just cooling off. Even kids and grown ups were in, knee high. One new dog to the park that Toby was getting along with (Toby had a good day), was really confused about the water. He seems to really confused that he couldn't walk on the water. He was really enjoying himself even though Toby kept trying dominate him (and everyone else).

Well, my big idea for photographing people and dogs at the park last Sunday was a bust. Toby was NOT on his best behavior. So much so that an over zealous dog mom got in my face when I put Toby back on his leash. Anyone who I did ask refused because they were in their dog park best which means they were wearing their grubbiest clothes. I didn't care about that but they did. I did get my best dog park friends to let me take some pictures but I guess I'm going to have to ask people ahead of time for now. If you want to be part of the process, just leave a comment to let me know.
I'm not too upset. It's just a minor setback. I've got lots of other projects going on so I'm excited that I've been using my camera so much. I've even been video taping which is a whole new level for me.

Another day we didn't make it

Toby just got into the park today when he heard the very busy Maynard Gun Club. I know it seems crazy that a gun club that is over 4 miles away would bother my dog. Anyone who asks what is wrong doesn't even know what that sound is. It's so distant and faint.
But Toby. He knows. He HATES it. We just got into the park, did some business, and then as soon as he heard the first shot, he was back in the parking lot. At this point, there is little I can do. I didn't have my leash with me and even if I did, I end up dragging him along, he's not happy; I'M not happy and I have to walk him around for 1/2 hour in the woods to get him to start to calm down, IF we make it that far.
It was a gloomy day anyway. The park was quiet. I was just hoping to start photographing people and their dogs today. I brought in my sample pictures and knew I could get a few more people to photograph. It's just a minor setback. I really planned to photograph next weekend so if you read this and are normally at the park; make sure you are ready to get your picture taken. It's going to be fun. The pictures are turning out really great so far. I've only got 3 but I really want to do a lot more. I'm hoping to photograph about 25 people and dogs and end up with 15 or so really great photos.

Emma on the run

It was a beautiful day this last Sunday. Because of Mother's Day, it was a little quiet but many of the regulars, like Emma, was here.

With the sun shining, it was not too hot or too cold, it was perfect for all the dogs. Some have lost their winter coats already and others are still holding on. The swimmers got to swim and the runners got to run so overall, it was beautiful at the park.

Emma's dad was explaining that Howard Stern might become my competition. He's been talking on his show about how much he is getting into photography but instead of taking all his new camera gear on the road, he has been taking photos of his dog. I don't think he's going to quit his day job so I think I'm all set.

Building new photos

As most of you know, I'm working on building up my portfolio which has given me a flood of ideas. One is to create a diptych of a dog and it's owner. I'm hoping that fans of my dog park blog who see me at the dog park would be interested in being photographed but I'm also making a bigger call to everyone and anyone who will let me set them up and photograph them. My idea is to photograph a portrait of the human and then do a portrait of the dog with the owner behind them. This might be a little tricky. Most dogs want to be looking at their owner or go to them if not wondering off to do their own thing.
This photo is of Bill and his dog Tyson, a little rat terrier. I'm excited about the outcome and think it would make for a good series of images. The plan is to set up a shoot day at the dog park on May 22 at the S. Acton dog park. The dog park is always full of dogs on Sunday morning so anyone who wants to bring their dog can get a photo done and I'll create a diptych of each. Everyone can get a digital file of the final edit of those I use or if you want it printed, I'll make it available as well for a small printing fee.

Run in the park

It was a beautiful morning at the dog park. Quiet because of Easter, but still a good crowd came out. Holiday or not, our dogs need their exercise. There was still areas that was really muddy but the grass is starting to take hold of the earth so it wasn't nearly as bad as the weeks before. The warmer weather added the extra moment where you could just stand around, gab with friends and watch the dogs run.
Of course, the dogs were loving it too. Most took advantage of the pond while others rolled in the mud. I watched a Golden walk out of the park looking like a brown lab, she had so much mud caked on her. A lot of dogs still have their winter coats still and will be getting trimmed soon. Another great step into spring heading for a hot and exciting summer.

Spring is slowly coming to the east

Even though we had around 4 inches of snow on Friday, it all quickly melted away and the sun is warming up our little park.
It was a really nice morning at the park. Toby and I came early, sloshed through the mud and went for a walk up in the woods. Toby wasn't on his best behavior but once he had his walk, he did okay. Last year, I started coming early to keep him from being overwhelmed and this spring and summer, I'm going to do the same. There is also a group of early birds I don't normally get to see and am looking forward to getting to know their dogs too.
There was a lot of energy at the park and the dogs knew it. Everyone was running around, playing chase and having a good time. As things thaw, I think the dogs start to pick up the scents of things that were buried under the snow all winter. I love seeing all the different dogs who don't always make it during the colder months. I hope to see even more as the grass gets greener.

I had to be home early today so I went dog park early. Another cool sunny day, the ground was still hard and there were only a few people there. I got to photograph one of the biggest dogs that come to the park though. This beautiful Irish Wolfhound towered over the other dogs and stood at my waste. It is amazing to see such a large dog and know that he is so gentle too. Unlike my Toby, he mostly just check everyone out and played a little. Good thing for him there were some very playful dogs who egged him on to play. A good time was had by all.

pick up poop day

I love my dog park. I try to go every week but I've missed a few lately (as you know) but the park still has a life of it's own. An idea surfaced last week by a few people to come to the park with shovels and buckets to pick up all the stray poop bombs that were missed over the winter. It's not surprising that this is needed. When unpacked snow is over 2ft high, it's not easy to get to, let alone, find you dogs waste over the winter. My hats off to all the dog owners who came out early, with shovels and buckets and walked from edge to edge of our park. The Town of Acton should be proud to know that their are so many people who care and appreciate this soccer field we share all year round.

Week three without the park

I'm not sure if this is really a bad thing for me. I miss my dog park friends and taking pictures at the park but it's March. The weather is slowly warming up and the snow is melting. Sounds good. The bad part is the MUD! I'm sure the park is a muddy mess. Most dogs don't mind that and as any seasoned dog owner will tell you, you don't wear nice clothes to the park. But I'm okay with missing out. Toby isn't a mud dog (thank goodness) and with the dirt and mud and how messed up the field gets, I'm not going to feel guilty for not going.

I do hope to be there this next week though. Finally have a free weekend and can get back to the park. I can't stay away too long. It is my ME time that I get to share with Toby and be surrounded by so much great dog energy.

Hey Dog park fans. Because I can't make it to the park Today, I decided to think about the dog park book project. Since I got a video camera, I'm even more excited about capturing stories as a stepping stone to writing a my dog park book. (and with cool tools like iPads and nooks, the options for a multi-media book sound even better). So I'm wondering what are some good questions to ask. As park lovers, what are you most interested in? Post comments of what you'd like to know more about either from individuals or just general ideas.

My hope is to get to a point where I've got a good foundations of interviews (I've got LOTS of photos) and start a Kickstarter request to self publish this book. I'd love to have this at a level of completion so I can move onto my next long term project - Working Dogs.

Missed park two weeks in a row

Well, even with great weather on Friday, Toby and I didn't make it to the park for 2 weeks in a row. Very sad. I won't be in town next weekend either so I'll have to find other interesting stories to send along to my blog followers.

I've been wanting to do three updates a week but that has yet to happen. Time gets away from me and by the end of the week, I barely have time to sleep, let alone blog about the dog park.

Okay. Enough of the pity party for myself. I hope you like the pic of Toby.

There is SO much snow at the park now. It's crazy but that doesn't stop too many people. There was still lots of dogs and people at the park today. Our space was a little smaller then some of the dogs might want but there was still running room. Where the snow wasn't packed down, it was at least 2 feet deep. Some of the lighter dogs could walk on it but most were swimming up to their noses when then ventured off the packed area. The fun trick for dogs who like to fetch is to throw a snow ball out in the unpacked snow and let them try to get out and back. A great way to get there energy out.
I know I don't get Toby out enough with all this snow. There is no space around my house for our daily walks so visits to the park is precious for him. Well, to be honest I really like it too.

Sunday at the park was really cold and sunny but not too windy. It ended up being a really nice day but I was worried I wouldn't even get past the parking lot. Toby isn't a fan of the cold and I had him wearing a sweater because it was in the teens. I figured he'd hate it and not even get out of the car. He did though and once he started running around, he seemed to enjoy himself. Many of the regulars were out and even a new Aussie puppy that everyone was fawning over.

I avoided the park for the past weekends because of the crazy weather that Toby isn't wild about but when I do go out I always like the photos I come back with. With the bare trees and snow on the ground, I am often really happy with the pictures I come back with. I brought out my new video camera too but editing and uploading those take a lot more work but I hope to have some great stuff soon.

For those of you who come to the park and read this, I'd be really interested in recording some of your best memories of the park any given day so when you see me at the park shooting, just strike up a conversation and let me record it. It's great to share memories.

I didn't make it to the park this weekend but I did get Toby out a little bit. Most know Toby isn't a cold weather dog. I did see though this short little story on WBZ about sled dog sprint races. It's not the long drawn out race like in Alaska Iditarod but more of a sprint race around a track in a park. This is something I'm going to have to find out more about.

it was a cold and icy day here at the park. Kids were skating on the pond which I always love. I grew up on CA and never had to deal with snow till I moved to MA. I've been here a while now so I'm use to it.

This little guy needed that sweater though because it was a cold morning and the wind was blowing. Toby and I started the morning by going for a walk in the woods before coming down to the open park. We needed to get our blood flowing and after that, it wasn't so bad.

Winter is always a little quieter at the park. I knew it would be too. Last week was warm and all the snow was melting and slushy. Now that it's cold, it's all frozen and icy. Makes for walking kinda tricky. Even the dogs were slipping around on the ice. That never stops them though. Might slow a few of them down but not the young ones. They still want to run, chase and play. That's a dogs life.

Happy new year to all my fellow dog park fans. Sundays weather was warm which caused the snow to raise up into a thick cloud of fog. As the fog was lifting, it started to rain so I didn't stay at the park very long.

It is a new year so a new chance for new beginnings. I got a video camera and plan on bringing it to the park on a weekly basis. I'm really eager to start collecting stories from people at the Acton park as well as some other area parks. I've been meeting people at other parks and want to go back and meet some new people and get their stories.

This year will offer some great opportunities and I'm really excited for them.

This last weekend, Toby and I went up in the woods behind the park. He wasn't really interested in playing with the other dogs today. The cold weather is setting in and he doesn't really want to hang out with other dogs. He's better off walking around and sniffing for the next spot to mark. It's funny how he goes from tree to tree, sniffing and marking all along the way. It doesn't matter if he's totally out of pee, he'll still go through the motions. It makes it even harder to take pictures of him. The only time he holds still, is when he's lifting his leg. This picture was posed and took lots of effort to get him to stay for the few seconds I took this picture.

Maggie and Snuggles are two new additions to the park on Sundays. Blue's parents adopted these two pups about a month ago. It wasn't really a planned adoption, it was more of lots of good things coming together. After Jake died, they had no plan on getting any new dogs. Blue is an older dog that doesn't take well to puppies so the idea of a new dog wasn't on the agenda right now.

The original owner of the dogs had 5 and was bringing them by the park to see if anyone was interested in buying them. No one ever did and he couldn't keep them. After some back and forth, Maggie and Snuggles came to stay for a week at Blue's house, with the cats and the goats. When the guy came back, Blue's parents said that they this was their new home and they were staying.

There was a few new members at the park on this busy sunny Sunday morning. I hope to see more each weekend.

Richard Olsenius book and video

When I first thought of this idea of doing a book project about dog parks, Many people pointed me Richard Olsenius as someone I had too look at. His book, Dog Stories, has become a major influence on my process and one of the main reasons I'm even perusing this process. Of all the books out about animals, pets or dogs, his is the one that closest reflects what I want my book aspires to.

While spending some down time this morning, I did some dog research and came across him again. Because of the cryptic way his site is created, it's not easy to find so I wanted to point out his site where he is promoting his book and Video. His background as a National Geographic photographer gives him some clout where he can create such a wonderful project. I think his book was created early in the boom of the pet industry and shows that very real bond between human and dogs. The stories are quite engaging and I will go back to his book when I want to read inspiring stories where these connection are very real.

With the holidays coming, for the people who's pets are part of their family, they would really enjoy this book or video. Check it out.

The time changed today but that doesn't mean anything to Toby and my boys. They don't agree that we should get an extra hour of sleep today. So be it. I got to get up early and went to the park early.

It was a cold fall day and I Geoffrey didn't really enjoy himself too much. Until there is snow to play with, I don't think he's going to want to come to the park anymore. That's okay. I'm just glad that Toby has been enjoying himself and being nice to all the other dogs.

I did get to meet Loofah, the little white dog on the table. If I'm right, he and the Saint Bernhard are both 7 months old. They each wanted to play but not the same way. Loofah wanted the ball and the Saint Bernhard wanted to run. They were very cute though at the bench by the water.

There has always been a big group of Aussies running around but there seems to be a growing number of St. Bernhards around the park the past few months. I was just looking through my old photos and even have pictures of some of them as puppies.

Next week I hope to photograph the two new Aussie's that just joined Jakes family. Geoffrey really wanted to leave so we had to go just as they were arriving today. They are SO CUTE. Keep checking in to see more pics.

This is Chaos. She was running around trying to keep up with all the other dogs this past weekend at the dog park. Super friendly and happy dog but I didn’t get to spend much time at the park this week.

We were at the park for maybe 10 minutes when I turn around to see Toby RUNNING for dear life back out to the parking lot. A couple seconds later, I could hear that the gun club, not far from the park was busy. Toby hates that sound and I found him under a car in the parking lot.

It was really nice and my son was still out in the park so I quickly put toby in the car and went back to the park. I though, well, at least my son will run around and play with the dogs. He was really animated about the dogs this week. But when I got back to him, he didn’t want to stay either. So even though the weather was nice, the dogs were playing and the lighting was good, I was out voted and I left the park.

Too bad because this was the first time I think I’ve talked with Chaos’s owner and got to take some pictures. There is always next week.

What a beautiful weekend at the park. The leaves around the pond are changing and the colors were perfect. This is such a short time of the year but I really enjoy it because I can still get out and enjoy the weather without worrying about my toes to freeze or over heating.

It was a busy day for puppies. One guy brought his 4 bernese mountain dogs puppies to the park. They were so cute but the crazy thing was they were carbon copies of each other. I couldn't tell the difference between 3 of them and the 4th difference was the minor coloring on the tip of his tail.

Now that I'm bringing my son, I've got to keep moving and keep him entertained. He's only 3 so everything is still about him and he doesn't understand that we come to the park for our dog Toby. He enjoys himself well enough and I really like socializing him around all the different dogs. He's learning there are so many different kids of dogs will all kinds of personalities. I think the next goal is to get him a soccer ball and let me run around the park with that. That should make for some more great photos of him and hopefully the dogs.

It was a beautiful fall day at the park this weekend. The sun was bright and the air was crisp. Geoffrey made a new friend this weekend with Ron who let Geoffrey play with him. Ron ended up getting more love from the dogs as well. When you get down the dogs level you are fair game for a kiss. He was a great sport though and Geoffrey is looking forward to next week.

Each week I've been seeing more and more new people. It's nice that a word of mouth event continues to grow. I hope more people continue to come.

It was a crazy weekend. On Saturday, I photographed at a Rottweiler fundraiser in Hopkinton State Park. It was a lot of fun. The dogs were all so well behaved and the people were all as nice as can be. I had a great time and took some great photos.

Sunday, a friend from out of town was visiting so I took the boys (Both sons and Toby) to the park to get their energy out. I went early so there wasn't a lot of dogs there yet. I did get to see Sky and Jet but there were others as well I didn't know. My boys needed to get their energy out and are always a lot of fun but can be a handful. I barely had time to take any pictures but I liked this one of the weimaraner. There was a puppy vizsla that just loved Geoffrey and Isaac. He would run back and forth between the boys to give them kisses. Geoffrey got knocked down but they had fun.

For the love of Dog, a Rottweiler rescue group is having it's annual fundraiser this Saturday. I'll be there with my camera, a portable studio and a printer taking studio shot of their dogs. This is the third event I've done this summer and the weather for this event is expected to be perfect. The event is from Noon - 4 p.m. at the Hopkinton State Park, Split Rock Group area. It should be a lot of fun. If anyone is going to be there, swing by and say hello.

When you go to the dog park, make sure you arrive in a good mood. If you stand around, even trying to put on a cheery face, the dogs will know if your mood is foul.

I went to the park in a foul mood this Sunday. The clouds were hanging low and it's been a crazy September but I wanted to get Toby to the park. I didn't bring my son so I got to stand around and chat with some of the regulars. While just stand there, one of the dogs came right up to me and peed on my leg. No warning, no sniffing; he just came up, lifted his leg and let me have it.

So you might be thinking that this is a fluke and it happens to people all the time. It does happen now and again but the only two times it happened to me was when I showed up at the park in poor spirits. So a word of caution. When heading to the park, remember why you are there and what you get from going. The best part of my week is Sunday when I go to the park, play and take pictures of the dogs and talk with all my dog park friends.

Jet loves Toby. As soon as we got to the park Jet was all excited about Toby. What I was happy about was Toby was okay with it. Toby doesn't always want to play "tag" with the other dogs and often doesn't do well with puppies but since Jet is 7 months and bigger so that might help. He's bigger then Toby but still has the puppy curiosity. He wants to push the limits but knows how to back off.

Jet is a new addition to Sky's family and it's been a really interesting addition. Since both are Boarder Collie's, they are very possessive. Since Sky is the senior member, he's had the upper hand but he is now shorter the Jet so the dynamics might shift. I'll have to wait and see. Jet and Sky haven't been to the park much but on this perfect Sunday, few people could resist.

I haven't been around as much just because too many family responsibilities have been taking my time. With Fall approaching and the school schedule starting, things might become more stable and I can spend more time at the park. I'm going to be shooting at another dog event soon and my wife is going to be doing her first craft fair which should both be a lot of fun. I'll try to keep you updated and let you know what exciting news is going on.

It was a perfect morning at the park on Sunday. It wasn't hot or cold. It was overcast but no chance of rain. Dogs could run around the park or jump in the pond and wouldn't overheat. There was a good number of dogs and no conflicts at all.

This is Bella who I've known since I started coming to the park 3 years ago. She is one of the regular Aussies that come and greet all of her other dog friends or come and stand between someones legs to get her butt scratched. One of the nicest dogs you could ever meet.

There was a good group of dogs, people and kids at the park. I've been bring my boy the past few weeks and he's liked it because he can run around and throw rocks into the pond. I think that is getting old though because this week, he just kept saying he wanted the slide. It's hard to explain to a (almost) 3 year old that the parks with slides are not so friendly to dogs. I should try going back to Waverly Oaks where there is a kids park on one area and a dog park in another. If I didn't have a silly day job taking me away from my dog, kids and photography, I'd be set. I have a plan, I just have to get it in motion.

I'm back!!! So sorry it's been so long since my last post. I've been traveling and dealing with all kinds of family fun. It was our yearly road trip to TN to visit with my folks. But that is another story (with all kinds of family drama).

Sunday, My son Geoffrey and I brought Toby to the Acton Park. From the moment I got up, Toby knew it was "park day" and was so excited. Every time I even got close to the front door, he was at my feet ready to go. By 10am we were ready and Toby was bouncing around, he was so excited. Just during the 2 mile drive to the park, he was crying and bouncing around, just so excited on finally getting back to the park.

The best part of all this is that Toby is now excited again on going to the park. He had a real rough patch where he didn't like the park and just wanted to leave. Now he's happy, and plays and doesn't fight with any of the other dogs. He still wants to be the ring leader but he is much better about it. I don't know why and I'm not even sure if I can take any credit but I'm just happy that I didn't give up on him. There was a long time when he hated the park. I'm guessing that now that I'm bringing my oldest son to the park, he has more support. Either way, I'm just happy he's happy and hope it lasts.

Oh yea, this picture of this bull dog. Isn't he great. He was really enjoying the water. He'd lumber in, following the other water dogs, and come running back out all refreshed. He was super friendly too. Every time I'd squat down to take a picture, he'd come running up to me. Hard to get the picture I wanted but how could I mind. I've seen him there a few times so I'm sure I'll have more pictures soon.

We had a great day at the park on Sunday. It was a good mix of new people and regulars. The only down side was the drama brought on by a 2 year old that got pushed over by one of the dogs. It's so funny how different people deal with it. I've been bringing my 2 year old boy who loves throwing rocks into the water. He got knocked over into the water and my response was to take pictures, wipe him off and give him a hug. The woman with the 2 year old girl was to grab her child, scream at the dog owner and panic. Its free dog day at the park. My (smarty pants) suggestion would be to put your kid on the leash or come by at a later time.

I do have a big request for my fellow dog lovers though who bring their dogs to the park. PICK UP YOUR DOGS POOP! I've been noticing an rise in dog poop around the park. If you think of your dog as one that poops in the woods, just be sure they do. Oh and if a soccer ball can get to the edge of the woods, you should pick up there too. Just because it's the edge of the woods, doesn't mean you shouldn't pick up. I don't mean to be your mom today but I stepped in a serious land mine and was not happy about it so I am using this to share. I always follow my dog until he poops and know him well enough to know there is a good chance he'll poop twice.

Ya all know I love the park, all the dogs and people who go to the park but I had to bring this up so we can continue to enjoy what we've got.

Toby, Geoffrey and I made it to the park early for once. I wanted to "beat the crowds" as it were. Just to make the transition easier on Toby and let my boy get his energy out by the water. It's harder to take pictures of the dogs when I'm watching my boy but we are still having fun.

I've noticed some of the regulars back at the park. This is Romeo. It's not the best picture because it doesn't show his great ears. He was being really silly. He was barking at a guy for no real reason. The man was wearing a hat and had his sun glasses on the brim so it looked like he had four eyes. He was also carrying a paper bag so that might have been odd too. Dogs don't like things to be out of place. I know Toby has barked at a man walking with a walking stick. It just didn't make sense to him.

Here is another example of someone putting the life of their dog equal to their family. This man is walking from TX to Boston, MA to raise awareness of cancer in dogs. I heard about it on the news today and was really moved by this mans commitment to the memory of his dog who he lost to cancer. I'm excited for a big event this weekend. It's a fundraiser called Whiskers Walk and I'll be setting up a booth their for people to get 5x7in portrait prints of their dogs. It should be a lot of fun. I hoping for good weather. Looks a little sketchy right now but as long as it's in the 70's I think it will be good. I just have to bring a lot of extra towels, just in case. Another great weekend at the park. Still not as busy as I'd expect but some of the regulars are starting to find their way back to the park. On a busy Sunday, there can be as much as 70 dogs. All getting along and doing what dogs do. Some will play in the water and others will chase in the grass.

I was talking to Jake's owners who were one of the people who was turned away on the day the Soccer fields were being used. They didn't know if the park was back open. There was talk that a lot of dog owners complained and the very next week it was back to being for dogs. I'm glad the Town of Acton fixed the problem. This park has been used by dogs for a very long time. I've heard people say they've brought their dogs here for over 15 years. Some have been coming even longer. It's a great community of dogs and people. That's why I come to this park every chance I get. I've been coming for about 3 years now and been photographing the whole time.

I didn't make it to the park this weekend. Too bad because it was beautiful out. Toby got lots of outdoors this weekend though so that counts for something.

In looking around the web, I've been finding fun animal links. One is the Blog on getting good pet photos on the North Shore Animal Rescue League in NY. They are just outside NYC and a very large no-kill shelter. I like that they are using their site to do more then just making people upset about how many dogs and cats that need homes. Check it out and you can see some good tricks to get good photos of your four legged family.

There seems to be a shift of park visitors on Sundays. I'm not sure if because of the season change or the Sunday confusion with the soccer group but there seems to be a lot of new faces and I've been missing some of the regulars. It is still as busy as ever but lots of people that I'm use to seeing haven't been showing up. I know as the school year ends, and with nicer weather, other dog options open up or weekend get eaten up by other engagements. I know my weekends have been filling up with lots of jobs around the house and events.

One event is that I'll be doing is my first photo shoot at a dog event called Whiskers Walk. I'll be setting up a booth to take pictures of peoples dogs and giving them a 5x7 print for a small fee. It should be a big event and I'm really excited about it. I've been spending a lot of time preparing for it. I hope to do a sample setup this next weekend.

I want to do a similar process at our park but without the print out. I'll put all the pictures up online for people to purchase any size they want. The shooting itself will be free.

I've been talking with my friends at Pawsh who are also working with another dog event in Boston that I might be involved. I hope this will be a busy summer.

Fall weather in spring

It was a cold, windy day at the park today. Very quiet but not unexpected for Mothers Day. Just a few people with their dogs today. It was better for Toby who has been much better in the past few weeks. Toby played well with others and ran all over the place instead of running back to the car and fighting with each other. It was really nice.

For mothers day, my whole family came to the park today. While my oldest, Geoffrey was playing by the water, these two dogs wanted to play tug. It started with the Boxer/Australian Cattle dog mix who really wanted the stick. The Black Lab also wanted a piece of it but he just wanted to hold on while the other ran with it. They were both excited for playing and getting the stick away from me.

It was nice having Geoffrey at the park with Toby. He's now two and a half and can really start to appreciate the park. This is the second time I've brought him this spring and I hope to bring him more though out the summer. My wife often gets to enjoy a lazy Sunday at home but was nice enough to come out for Mothers day. We ended up at Babico's for brunch. All in all, we had a nice family day together, starting with the park.

Dogs are still at the park

This Sunday was a great day all around at the park. Lots of dogs. I got to bring my oldest who LOVED all the dogs, and the pond. But most important, the soccer group moved their event to the smaller field around the corner. The way the park is set up, there is a smaller field off to the side. I'm not sure if they painted lines or if they brought goals over but it seemed to work out.

My last post was about how the park (which happened to be this park) mentioned that a soccer group called Fair Play, was taking over. They were using the park last week and it caused all kinds confusion. This last Sunday tough, they moved to the smaller field which worked out well for everyone. The Fair Play group is for very young players so I don't think they are going to worry about regulation size fields or any other smaller details. They just want the kids to come out and have fun and us dog people want the same for our dogs.

I'm hoping this will work out. If everyone is willing to work together, I'm sure all will be fine.

ALERT: One less park?

Today I got this post on one of my previous posts but I thought it was too important to leave alone.

Alert! April 18, 2010. Acton has given this wonderful dog run park (Spring Hill Conservation) to a for-profit company to run soccer clinics for 3 year olds. Dogs are no longer allowed to run there on Sundays as they have for years! Please write to Acton or to the company running the clinics (Fair Play).

I tried doing some quick research into this but I can't seem to find anything on the Acton MA website or the Fair Play companies website.

This is really upsetting to me but I want to get all the facts in line before I write anything more on the subject. All the interaction I've had with Acton officials have all be very positive so this is very surprising that a decision like this would be made without any interaction from the public.

With the continued nice weather, Toby and I are starting to take longer walks. Neither of us our winter weather fans so most of the winter has been cooped up in the house. If Toby was more of a winter dog, I'd be willing to spend more time outside (and buy even bigger winter coats) but he is happy to get back inside and under the covers.

We went for a long walk and he really appreciated it. He was able to get out that nervous energy that he gets at the park and wasn't a compete nervous wreck. I hope he'll continue to do well. I know I could use the walks as well.

Cesar's Daddy is gone

I'm really sad to hear about the passing of Daddy, Cesar Millan's pit bull. I'm a fan of Cesar but an even bigger fan of Daddy. I know that Cesar's process has some flaws but he also gets results for his clients and loves his dogs very much.

An inevitable truth of inviting dogs into our families is that they will pass. Daddy had everything a dog could ask for. He will be missed.

Last week was SO nice! The temperature was in the 70's and felt so good. It was short lived though and the cold, rain and even snow has returned. I can't really complain though. More warm weather is on the way and more dogs were out today because of spring. For most dogs, this is ideal. It's cool enough to run around an not get over heated but not too cold to keep them (or their owners) from going out. The pond has thawed out so those water dogs can run in and swim. The melting has passed so the mud is hardening up and little bits of green is popping though the hard ground.

I'm so looking forward to the trees turning green again though. With spring ramping up, I can shoot more and Toby can play more. I'm going to try to take every chance I get to take him to the park to calm his nerves. It won't be easy because the gun clubs are working too. Having two small boys at home that need attention often leaves Toby to get shorter walks but he has been really good. I hope to bring my oldest to the park on Sundays over the summer.

I hope to even have a photo event at the park this spring. I'm hoping in April to set up a portable studio and shoot dogs as a promo. Keep a look out because I'll be putting dates up soon.

Spring is coming

We've had a really nice stretch of weather here in New England. It's been sunny and warm for days. As it comes to a close and more normal weather starts moving in, I really wanted to get Toby to the park. We didn't get there till after 11 so most of the regulars I know were already gone.

The hard part for Toby is that with warmer weather comes loud noises from the local gun clubs and soon, thunder storms. I always feel bad for Toby when that happens. He just can't help himself. In this photo, his only thought is to get back to the car. We could hear the gun club from the moment we got to the park and he just wanted nothing of it. There was still a lot of dogs running and playing. The lake was thawed and the water dogs were all splashing around. Only a week or so ago, that was all frozen over and people were still skating on it.

We ended up leaving after only 20 minutes of walking up a trail and back. We didn't make it too far because of all the mud now that the snow has melted. On the upside, Toby was good. He didn't get into any fights even with all the big dogs were charging at him. Good boy Toby.

another small step for dog rights

The Mass House has voted to ban the surgical "debarking" or silencing of dogs or cats unless a vet says it's needed for the health of the dog. These small steps help in reducing the amount of animal cruelty that happens. The vote was 150-1.

I just found out about this and was shocked to find a 15 year old from Needam high, Jordan Star, proposed this bill with the help of Scott Brown and backed by Democratic House Majority Whip Lida E. Harkins. This process is over a year in the making and seems to be one way of getting both parties to work together. Good work.

Everyone who brought the dog to the park this weekend either planned on giving there dog a bath or had to anyway. It's been raining in and around Mass for a few days and the temps have been staying above freezing. All this makes for some really messy parks. I bailed out on our walk in the woods today because there are too many mud traps on the path. A few weeks ago we had to abandon our walk because of the path being too icy. Today I didn't even try because of the mud.

I am excited that March is here. I've got plans for some spring photo shoots at the park in Acton, Waltham, Boston, and a few other places. I think it will be lots of fun. I'm going to set up a studio shoot and try to photograph as many dogs as I can. I'm hoping that will be a good promotion for my photography business. Still in the planning stages but more info will come soon.

For the dog that has everything

Dog toys as just toys are so old skool. Check out Nina Ottosson. She has created a whole set of dog PUZZLES. Yea, average chew toys with some food in it isn't enough for the serious dog owner anymore. You've got to get the puzzle to really keep your pet entertained. My mind thought that this might be a little odd for a dog. Almost mean because I would think the dog doesn't really care about the game, only about the treat. But in the article in the Bark magazine online, she points out dogs that are goal driven, like herding dogs, really enjoy and learn the process. I like the idea. I'm not sure my Toby would really be into it but I do know a few dogs at the park who would get a kick out of something like this to pass the time. If they couldn't make it to the park that is.

Aussies out in force

It was another cold, windy day at the park. Toby and I tried to walk up the paths behind the open area where the dogs spend most of there time. We didn't get very far because the path was too icy. We came back down and hung out with the Aussies. There is always a few here at the park. There can be as many as 12 or more on a busy day but that is more in the summer.

There were some new dogs who found there way to the park this weekend too. Word of mouth is a powerful thing. One dog, Colby (like the cheese), just moved to the area and are really loving the open space. his owner heard about the Acton park from a neighbor and found her way here. It's always good to have more dogs playing. Colby met Ringo and played non-stop for almost an hour.

Busy but cold

Winter can be hit or miss at the park. When one day can be sunny and nice and the next could be windy, snowing and cold. you'll always have the regulars at the park. They know what to expect and their dogs demand that they show up. So the people show up all wrapped up in there winter gear, faces covered, gloves on and leash ready.

There was a group who showed up on sweat shirts thinking that would be enough in an open field with no protection from the wind. I watched as they scurried back to their car to get their heavy coats.

Most of the dogs don't care. Some like mine, a small rat terrier with a short coat is much happier in doors, on the couch, wrapped in a blanket (yea, he's spoiled). But others like the Aussies love it. They can run and never get over heated. The community and interaction is something that they look forward to every week. To be honest, so do I.

How can such a sunny day feel so cold. Okay, I know. I'm a wimp but if I am, so is Toby. It's been really cold for the past few days and even with the sun out, I didn't last too long at the park.

Some dogs, like the Aussies don't care at all. They love being out in the snow, running around, chasing balls. It was great for them. The More the better.

Tikka, Jake, bella and others were all out today. There is a pretty large group of Aussies who come very weekend and they are always great to see. Very smart dogs, they love coming out, being around other dogs as well as good with people, you never have to worry about them getting out of hand. As herding dogs, I'd expect to see them chasing the other dogs around and try to keep an order but that isn't the case. They hang out, play ball, and check in with there owners most of the time. It does help that there owners love them dearly and treat them so well.

It's nice to see that lots of good postings and keeping my blog active is slowly paying off. I've been asked by this dog training website (trainpetdog.com) to sign up for the 2010 Dog Blog Award Contest. This isn't based on the quality of the blog or even the content. I could put up my other blog about commuting which I abandoned a while back and if I could get enough people to vote for it, I could win. It's all about getting you, my readers to click on the link and sign in.

Now at first I was kinda excited but then was a bit skeptical. This is normally to get people to sign up to be on a mailing list. I got to meet Henry, the Chocolate Lab at the park this weekend. He was adopted from Buddy Dog and is such a great dog. He's super friendly and always happy. His dad was telling me about how he is all Lab except for one thing. He hates the water. They have a pool at there house and one even with lots of coaxing, Henry just won't get in. One time, running around the back yard, he misjudged a turn and he ended up in the pool. Henry's dad said he never saw a dog get out of water so fast. He can swim okay but just hates to get wet. Everything else though is all Lab. Friendly, happy and a lot of energy.

Take the dog for a walk and slow down

Jan 3, at 6:28pm, my second son, Isaac was born. He's a happy healthy baby boy. He's been home for just under a week now and my wife and I have been doing our best to adjust to the lack of sleep and keeping our first, Geoffrey, happy and on a schedule. It's been really good all things considered but one things that is really important is to get out and walk the dog.

Toby and I walk twice a day and those walks, even in this really cold January in New England, are times where I slow down and do the simplest of things. I put one foot in front of the other and walk. Toby and I are lucky to have the Assabet river walk right across from my house so during the day, Toby and I will walk along the train. I get to stop thinking about all the other things I have to do and reflect on those things the day often eats away. Between family demand, work, my photography, and trying to design new classes, I often feel overwhelmed. But went I walk Toby, I feel better; I slow down and can collect my thoughts so I can feel better about the mountain of stuff I have to do.

Seeing dogs everywhere

First, I'd like to apologize to my followers who read my blog. I've been too quiet for too long. Weather and family life over the holiday season has been keeping me away from the park. I have big plans that I haven't had any chance to do but am trying to do some tests to make them happen. I really want to start adding video to my blog and my process. I'm new to the process so I've been practicing at home on my other favorite subject; my son.

I've also noticed that the more involved I get with dogs, the more I see them around. Weather it's about specials about how bad puppy mills are or the state of Chihuahuas in California. Maybe it's because my ears perk up every time I see something about dogs on the news. I find most stories to be so short and without any real depth to it. I usually do my own research and find out where to story comes from. If it makes it to the local or national news, there is a much deeper story involved.

I'd like to also wish all my readers a happy and exciting new year. I've got lots of lofty goals that I hope to get started this next year and I hope everyone and their pets get everything they need.

Last Sunday I wasn't able to go to the park but it was for a very good cause. Through a friend of a friend, I ended up meeting up with a fancy dog store off Newbury St. in Boston called Pawsh Dog Boutique. They have been around for about a year and are BIG dog lovers. They wanted to do a fundraiser for the Animal Rescue League of Boston. So I worked with them in putting together a Santa photo shoot. They did a great job setting up a fun space with a decorated tree and presents. We had a great turn out of over 30 dogs and made over $300. Everyone had a great time. The Santa, (one of the owners Brother) was a real trooper sitting in the hot santa suit, holding on to all the dogs in our little shooting studio.

It was a lot of fun for everyone involved too. The dogs were great, the owners were very supportive and everyone ended up with some really nice photos (if I do say so myself).

I'm bringing a video camera to the park this Sunday if we don't get totally snowed out. I want to do more multimedia and get some stories from people.

First real snow of the winter

It's December and we finally have a real snow fall for the winter. Oh did the huskies and other snow dogs LOVE the park today. These two just loved to play and were all over the place. It has been such a mild fall with it still getting into the 60's just a few days before. Now the snow is here and hanging around.

Toby and I weren't really ready for it but that is okay. We decided to take a walk up in the hills and I ended up taking lots of classic winter photos of trees covered in snow.

After our walk, we ended up back at the park and it was really busy. Everyone was bundled up in the snow gear that has been packed away for so long. Cups of warm coffee in hand, the dogs were given a wide space to run and frolic in the snow. I could tell that the dogs were extra excited about the snow. To wake up and see your whole world new and covered in this white powder is an amazing feeling for many dogs.

I hope we get some more snow soon. The clean new snow is always fun for dogs and owners alike.

Sunday was a much better week then last week. Both Toby and I were in a much better frame of mind. It was a fun busy day. After a few days of gloomy weather, it was nice to get to the park and see my park friends and let Toby run.

On Sunday, I brought Toby to the park and he wasn't that happy about going. It was busy and I got him a new "gentle leader" leash which he wasn't wild about. All that lead Toby to try to wonder back to the car to make me leave. I didn't want to leave because I wanted to photograph the dogs and talk with people.

Well I should back up to say that I went to bed to late the night before and hadn't eaten breakfast before going so I was also a little out of it.

So anyway, I had to keep Toby on his leash and as I was talking, a boxer thought I was a tree or fire hydrant and peed on my leg. I totally deserved it. I was just standing in the same spot too long and I was in a bla, grumpy mood. He knew I was in a funk and couldn't shake it. I had to just laugh at myself at that point. It all became clear that I was in a grumpy mood and even though I didn't say anything, that boxer knew the best way to get me out of my rut was to point it out to me.

So I was marked as his for the rest of the day. That and a bull dog puppy can bring me out of any funk because, really, going to the park with Toby and seeing all the dogs and owners out is the highlight of my week.

Back in Acton

Toby and I were back in Acton this weekend. It was a beautiful day and because of the time change, there were people coming and going all morning.

This is a picture of Zoe who is one of the regulars at the park. She is an active fun dog who LOVES the tennis ball. She'll play chase with some of the other dogs as well but will go after any tennis ball thrown her way. She has the nicest personalities and gets along with all the dogs at the park.

It was nice being back in Acton this weekend. There was a lot of the regulars that I got to see. Even Toby was good this weekend. He got to chase the ball and didn't get into any fights. I think having a few weekends exploring new places helped.

We may head over to Waverly Oaks in Waltham this weekend if I get the time.

First visit to Stodderd's Neck

I have to admit, I'm really jealous of all those people living on the south shore. For those who don't know, this is south of Boston right on the water. Stodderd's Neck is a public park that has been taken over by the dog lovers in the area. It's not an official dog park but sure looks like one and it's a perfect location for it too. It's surrounded on 3 sides by water and there is a gate at the entrance that makes it hard for more then one person at a time to get in.

Sunday was a PERFECT fall day all across New England and people were out enjoying it with their dogs. The parking lot was packed and the park was hopping with all kinds of dogs. The photo here is of Rory, a regular at the park. There was lots of new faces like my dog, Toby but for as many dogs as there were, there was still plenty of room.

This area, even though on the water, is surrounded by bushes and there is a small hill at the center. The is a small path that follows the inside area of the park or if you want you can walk out on the beach and let your dogs romp around in the water. After talking to another regular at the park, I'd advise against it right after it rains. The rain washes all the bacteria up and on more then one account, dogs have gotten sick. If it hasn't rained in a few days though, it should be fine.

I wish I wasn't an hour away but I sure enjoyed my visit and I can't wait to go back.

Keller reporting on pet economy

John Keller of WBZ here in Boston did his fluff piece on pets and the economy. To all of my readers, you know well that we will do anything for our pets. I would have been happier if he mentioned the swelling of shelters because of people abandoning pets or how the economy has hurt so many pets but this is a one sided point of view to take a jab at Martha Stuart who has started a pet line of clothes. The jab doesn't seem very fair.

Martha has devoted a big part of her website and time into her dogs and pet life. Why wouldn't she start a pet clothing line? Anyone who can put together a tea party for 150+ can spoil her pets and share it with the world. She has even a pet adoption area within her site. Some might say she should work with petfinder.com but as long as pets that need homes are finding them, then I'm all for it.

Rain rain, go a way

It was such a cold wet rainy day that I didn't take Toby to the park. Toby is a fair weather dog so every time I took him out, he had to be coaxed out. He would go out, do his business and run right back inside. It's funny how similar he and I are.

Toby is up to his old tricks

Toby and I went out to the dog park in Sharon MA. It is one of the few official dog parks in the state. It was established in 2004 and from the looks of it gets a lot of support and use. I went with a friend and his two new dogs. What is really nice is that it's a fenced in location that has multiple entrances. There is a space for smaller dogs who want to be separate from the bigger dogs.

It was a beautiful day with a good number of dogs. I'd say that there was about 25 or 30 dogs there. The sun was warm and the cool Sunday afternoon. Toby was up to his normal antics. A few dogs wanted to play with him and he didn't want anything to do with them. He kept picking fights with anyone who came close. Part of that is him just being nervous about being someplace new.

By the end of the day though, Toby was super tired and had a great day. I think that the next trip will be exciting for him.

I'm looking forward to coming back to the park. There are a lot of regulars who show up and I'll focus my attention on their dogs and the great stories they have about them.

I love going to the Acton park every Sunday with Toby. It is my one moment to myself with Toby where nothing else matters. I get to see my dog park friends and relax for an hour without the pressures of work and home life.

Toby on the other hand is starting to rebel against the park. For the past three weeks, he’s either not gone into the park or left within 5 minutes of getting there. This last Sunday he wouldn’t go into the park at all, even for the tennis ball. There is another open area hidden behind the park that I took him and he was okay with that. We threw the ball around for about a half hour but he never really relaxed. You can tell from the photo that he’s still nervous.

I think my next goal is to go and explore some of the other dog parks around the area. I have some friends in Sharron MA where this is another official dog park area. I’ll try to go visit them this weekend. I want to go back to the Waverly Oaks park in Waltham where I first started taking Toby on a regular basis when I lived in Watertown. The last time Toby and I went there, he LOVED it. I know that the Fells park is also a very dog friendly place to go. It’s going to be a lot more driving and as the weather gets colder, there may be a few less people with their dogs but I think it will be a good adventure for both Toby and me.

No park for me

Did you see me at the park today? No? Well, thank Toby for that. We got there and with in 5 minutes Toby heard shots from the gun club near by (over a mile away) and ran back to the car. We didn't even get half way into the park before he turned around. I even brought the chuck-it and extra tennis balls but had no luck at all. On such a nice day too.

The only good thing about it is that I got to go home and watch the Sunday Morning Early show which I normally miss. Bill Geist had a unique segment on the process of adopting a dog for the first time. This wasn't the normal Geist segment where he goes out into the unknown parts of the US to find fun things on the fringe. This was much more personal and is able to point out some of the powerful, yet simple things about becoming a dog owner that we as dog owners know but those that aren't don't understand. It is one of the rare stories that Bill is just as much of the story as his dog and was nice to see. Check it out if you get a chance.

The star of the park

This Irish Wolfhound was the star of the park today. This big happy boy towered over all the other dogs and even some of the people. Everyone with a camera, even a cell phone camera had to take pictures of him. He is just a big softy who wanted all the other dogs to play chase him. That is him with his owners.

Even with this Wolfhound towering over everyone, today seemed to be about little dogs. There was between 10, 15 or even more smaller dogs. Terriers and pugs were everywhere. The energy was very different because of them. They were running and barking and stirring up all the other dogs at the park. That was easy to do because it go so busy today.

I kind of expect it to be a slower day because the weather was overcast in the morning. By 10 though, the sun was out and it was warming up. Toby and I were at the park for over an hour and even when we left, the parking lot was complete full.

Beautiful day

Wow, I couldn't have asked for a more beautiful day. The sun was warm but the wind was cool. No bugs around and everyone was just happy and enjoying themselves. It was an average busy day but so nice.

Toby was being good too. I brought 2 balls today just in case. This dog ended up with one which I expected to happen. It's a rare day when I show up so prepared.

I was also being shadowed by a student from SESOP. She needed to photograph and interview a professional photographer. My ego got a big boost from that. When she first started taking photos it was while she was a dog walker. Now as a student she would like to find others making a go at it. It's not easy but, to me, there is no better subject matter (well, except my on family).

I'm heading back outside now. This day can't be spent in front of my computer, even if I do enjoy entertaining my blog followers.

Dog park drama

There was much drama at the park this weekend. Well, as much as Toby can create. The week before, Toby got into a dominance match with a much larger dog. For some reason these two really want to put each other in their places. The problem for Toby is that the other dog is MUCH bigger. Poor Toby got nipped on the side of his face because, like a good terrier, he didn’t ever back down.

After that Toby just said “lets go!” and ran out to the parking lot till I followed. I found him just hiding under a car panting. I didn’t really know the extent of how shook up he was till after I got him home and found the bite. Toby stayed by my side the whole rest of the day. He normally wants to be around but Sunday, he never left my side, even when I was down in my basement office.

There is a unique energy when 2 dogs go at it. When that happens the whole park, people and dogs descend on the action. It takes some shouting and pushing to get the action to stop and just like that; it’s over.

I’m not going to the park this next weekend. It’s my son’s second birthday weekend so we’re going out to celebrate. I’ll find something new to write about though. There is always something going on in the world of dog parks.

Rest in peace Fenway

I'm sadden to find out that Fenway, a beagle mix, who I've known since I first started coming to the Acton park has died. His owner sent out a email saying that there was some accident while they were at their vacation home. Fenway was a active fun loving dog who's family loved him very much. It must be extremely difficult to deal with such a sudden loss.

Scout, their other beagle mix, must be feeling pretty lost without his best friend right now. They were perfect for each other because for as high strung as Fenway could be, Scout is equally relaxed. I rarely saw one without the other.

I will miss seeing Fenway dragging his owner down the road on his roller blades who is barely holding on. My heart and sympathy goes out to Fenway's entire family at this difficult time.
